The first XC Patriot League Freshmen JV Jamboree was hosted by Hingham High on Thursday, Sept. 19. The meet was created to give the young runners a day to run a shorter course without the varsity runners on their teams.

“At our coaches meeting in August we talked about having a jamboree for those who are just starting out. We tried to focus our attention on these athletes and let them have their day,” Hingham Boys XC Head Coach Fred Jewett said. “I volunteered to have Hingham host the meet and the Hingham XC coaches ran the meet so the other coaches could watch. Our goal was to make the meet as inclusive as possible and fun for everyone. The Hingham XC and Track boosters volunteered their time and ran the concession stand.”

Hingham Captains Conrad Davis and Liam Slane as well as other members of the Harbormen varsity program took the visiting varsity runners for a run in Wompatuck State Park. They returned and helped the coaches coordinate the meet while the visiting varsity runners cheered for their teams. Parents filled the stands and the teams lined the course and cheered for everyone. The Hingham coaches who worked the meet were Todd Deely, Jamie Cataldo, David Allen, Sam Mildrum and Joe Tarentello.

The Jamboree featured four races - 9th Grade Boys, 9th Grade Girls, JV Boys and JV Girls. The course was 1.57 miles and began and ended on the track at Hingham High. Over 220 athletes competed and there were over 300 athletes and coaches in attendance.

“All the XC Coaches are trying to promote sportsmanship, mutual respect and fun when competing and we hit the jackpot. The enthusiasm of the athletes was electric as they cheered for each other and rushed the finish line,” Jewett said.

The top three Hingham Boys and Girls XC runners in each group were:

9th grade Boys: Colin Rooney, Lucas Bell and Marco Sgobbu.

9th grade Girls: Whitley Thompson, Natalie Kardoos, Bridget Baynes.

JV Boys: Anthony Longo, DJ Harris and Ryan O'Leary.

JV Girls: Julia Burm, Abigail MacDonald, Ashley Jewell.

In the freshmen girls race the Harborwomen took two of the top five places. Freshman Whitley Thompson finished third in her first ever-race and Natalie Kardoos finished 5th. Both girls ran with courage and showed great promise. The top five overall were 1. Carson Cerow (Duxbury,12:28); 2. Jess Lemieux (Duxbury, 12:37); 3. Whitley Thompson (Hingham,12:44); 4. Kelly Palmer (Plymouth North, 12:55); 5. Natalie Kardoos (Hingham, 13:12).

In the girls Junior Varsity race the Hingham girls showed the program’s depth by taking three of the top five and six of the top nine spots. The Harborwomen had six finishers before any other team had two runners across the line. Hingham was led by Julia Burm who ran a terrific race narrowly missing her first victory. The top five overall were 1. Kiley O'Brien (Silver Lake, 12:02); 2. Julia Burm (Hingham, 12:02); 3. Abby McDonald (Hingham, 12:04); 4. Ashley Jewell (Hingham, 12:14); 5. Emma Diamond (Plymouth South, 12:15).

Coach Jewett wanted to thank Hingham Athletic Director, Jim Quatromoni, for his help and support and Head Football Coach, Mark Nutley for moving his team’s practice and cheering on the runners.

Congratulations to all who ran at the Jamboree.
