Alex Karaban made a big first impression in his debut with Algonquin as the freshman had a team-high 26 points to lead the Tomahawks to a 66-60 win over Doherty in boys basketball action in Northborough on Friday night.
Senior captain Nick Redden finished with 17 points for Algonquin in its season opener.
With the score tied at 55-55 and 3:34 left in regulation, Algonquin went on what ultimately was a game-winning 8-1 run, during which Karaban scored four points and Redden added a short jumper.
Doherty was able to get the Tomahawks’ lead down to 64-60, but could get no closer.
“Doherty played well, they matched our intensity and they’re a very good, well coached team,” Algonquin coach Brian Doherty said. “We have some things to work on, but this was our first time playing together, so we’ll be fine.”
MARLBOROUGH 46, MAYNARD 43: Senior Mike Villodas scored a team-high 12 points as Marlborough was able to hang on to a narrow season-opening win over non-league foe Maynard.
The Panthers were up two points as the Tigers’ Tim Lawton was at the free throw line with two seconds left and a chance to tie. But Lawton missed both free throws and Marlborough was able to secure the rebound before getting fouled.
“We’ll definitely take the win,” Marlborough coach Scott Bauman said. “It wasn’t pretty by any means but we just grinded it out.”
Marlborough hosts Groton-Dunstable on Friday at 7 p.m.
DOVER-SHERBORN 65, NIPMUC 49: Senior captain Brett Stark scored 13 points to pace Dover-Sherborn to a win over non-league foe Nipmuc in the first game of the season for both teams.
Junior Jacob Brown tallied 13 points and sophomore Evan Skeary added 12 for the Raiders while junior Kirby Ryan notched 10 points in the victory.
Senior Jack Tempesta scored 14 points and junior Andrew Griswold added 13 points to lead Nipmuc.
“It was nice to see a balanced attack from our guys,” D-S coach Rick Grady said. “Kirby Ryan and Jacob Brown were able to give us an important spark to control the game.”
D-S visits Medfield on Friday at 6:30 p.m.
Nipmuc next visits Bellingham on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
AMSA 51, WEST BOYLSTON 46: Mark Bibiu had a game-high 23 points for AMSA (1-0) in its season-opening victory over West Boylston.
Nick Gopaul added eight points and 11 rebounds for the Eagles in the win.
AMSA will be on the road against Parker Monday night at 6 p.m.
DOVER-SHERBORN 35, NIPMUC 12: Sophomore Kate Mastrobuono led Dover-Sherborn with nine points and eight rebounds as the Blue Raiders defeated Nipmuc in a low-scoring affair in both team’s season opener.
Freshman Reese O'Connell also scored nine points with five of those points coming from the line and came away with six thefts.
Dover-Sherborn travels to take on Medfield on Friday at 5 p.m.
The Warriors will host Bellingham on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
NATICK 102, ST. JOHN’S (SHREWSBURY) 72: Freshman Zachary Bubonovich won the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:15.81 and the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:09 to lead Natick to a non-league win over St. John’s (Shrewsbury).
Sophomore Allen Cheung also won the 50 free with a time of 23.66 and the 100 free with a time of 53.53 for the Redhawks.
Senior Kyle Burati won the diving event with a 242.25, which sets a new personal best mark.
Natick hosts BC High on Monday at 6 p.m. at Keefe Tech.
MILFORD 92, CANTON 78: Sophomore Aiden Macdonald won the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:20.8 and took first place in the 100 butterfly (1:00.21) to lead Milford to a win over Hockomock League foe Canton in the first meet of the season.
Senior captain Gianni Panno placed first in the 200 freestyle medley (2:02.34) and won the 100 free (53.99) for the Scarlet Hawks.
Milford hosts Oliver Ames on Dec. 20 at 4 p.m.
CANTON 94, MILFORD 76: Junior Elena Bontempo won the 200-yard freestyle medley with a time of 2:21.0 but Milford lost to Hockomock League rival Canton in the first meet of the season.
Senior Kate Donahue placed first in the 500 free (6:52.02) and sophomore Eva Parsons won the 100 butterfly (1:08.93) for the Scarlet Hawks while Kim Stochaj took first in the 100 backstroke (1:10.20).
Milford hosts Oliver Ames on Dec. 20 at 4 p.m.
MANSFIELD 56.5, FRANKLIN 38.5: Senior Andrew Faught, won the 55-meter hurdles in 8.86 seconds. Junior Lism Pek, won the 300-M in 38.43 and was second in the 55-M dash in 7.02. Junior Tyler Brogan, won the mile in 4:44.37 and senior Mike Hage was second in the mile in 4:44.43 and was second in the 2-mile as well in 10:06. 46.
Franklin runs against Attleboro next Saturday at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston at 5 p.m.
