The Swampscott Big Blue baseball team burst out of the gate in their playoff game against Austin Prep Wednesday night at Fraser Field, scoring four runs in the top of the first.

Unfortunately, Swampscott didn’t close and lock the gate behind them. The Cougars plowed through, scoring five times in the bottom of the inning, getting the runs flowing on their way to a 26-10 win. That score is not a typo.

The win in the Division 3 North semifinal round puts the Cougars in the finals on Sunday against the winner of Thursday’s Lynnfield vs. Dracut game. Swampscott’s season ends at 13-11.

Things started off great for the Big Blue, Spencer Perkins led off with a walk, and Ryan Graciale walked with one out. Nick Reiser followed Graciale onto the bases when a pitch hit him.

Dave Quill singled Perkins home, and Dylan January cleared the bases with a double to deep center. Graciale, Reiser and Quill chugging across the plate.

Austin Prep came right back, scoring five runs in the bottom of the first off Blue starter Luke Marshall. Nick Cafarrelli knocked in three with a double, and Jake Thain cranked a two-run homer to put the Cougars ahead to stay.

It was not a clean game by any stretch. Five Swampscott pitchers walked 11 AP batters, plunked another four, and the Blue made five errors, which really hurt their cause Wednesday night.

Austin Prep was charitable, too. Three Cougar pitchers walked nine Swampscott batters, hit another two, and made two errors. Swampscott scored their 10 runs on only five hits, and Austin Prep needed just 14 hits to score 26 runs.

Austin Prep scored six in the second and five in the third to go up 16-4 with the Blue coming up in their half of the fourth, looking to close the gap.

They started chipping away when Perkins opened the Blue fourth with a walk, and came home on a Reiser fielder’s choice with two outs. Quill walked to put two on, and

January came through again with another double, scoring Reiser and Quill, to make it 16-7.

Zack Elwell took a free pass after January’s hit, and they both came around on a double by Jonathan Oriakhi. Brett Benoit also walked, and he scored on an error to make it a 16-10 ballgame.

The Blue just couldn’t keep the Cougars off the scoreboard; AP scored four in the fourth and six in the fifth to account for the final score. Colin Reiling, the fifth Swampscott pitcher, didn’t allow a run in the bottom of the sixth.
