SOMERSET — Mansfield police officers came to the Somerset Police Station this week to do some training for the Somerset officers who have been chosen for the new Problem Oriented Policing Unit.

Four Somerset officers applied to be in the POP Unit with Brian Dempsey and Shaun Kelly being chosen for the jobs.

Somerset Police Chief George McNeil said officers Dempsey and Kelly will be looking at the top five most common calls to the Police Station that are responded to on a weekly basis. He said the officers will try to address those calls by talking to people and going to the neighborhoods where the calls are originating from.

Chief McNeil said the Mansfield police officers in their POP Unit will be talking to Dempsey and Kelly about what they have been doing and the successes they have had. Chief McNeil said they have had the POP Unit in Mansfield for awhile. He said the police chief there said the unit has helped to reduce calls coming into the Police Station.

Chief McNeil said officers Dempsey and Kelly will be working as a POP Unit in four-hour shifts and will continue with their full-time work as patrolmen. He said the POP Unit work will be paid for with overtime money. Chief McNeil said the officers will be identifying problems, having discussions about how to solve them and making their own decisions. He said the work falls under community policing.

Chief McNeil said the POP Unit will help to free up other police officers to address other calls and do more traffic enforcement.

Chief McNeil said the types of calls the POP Unit could be addressing could include disputes between neighbors, chronic domestic disturbances at the same home or chronic complaints about other issues, such as youths hanging out in a location and causing problems.

Chief McNeil said he thought officers Dempsey and Kelly would be good fits for the POP Unit because of their experience in the Police Department. He said Kelly has been with the Somerset Police Department for five years and before that time, was a police officer in North Carolina for several years. Dempsey has worked for the Somerset Police Department for 12 years. He has a master's degree in criminal justice and a master's certificate in victim's services, which Chief McNeil said is ideal for the POP Unit. Chief McNeil said Dempsey is a smart guy who can deal with people in neighborhoods.
