Open Letter From Select Board candidate Paul Reynolds

I’m truly appreciative of the many people who approached me and urged me to run for a third term on the Dedham Select Board. And, to the 72 people who signed my nomination papers in just over 24 hours, I am deeply grateful.

However, the quick cycle time to pursue the last-minute nomination didn’t leave me sufficient time check in with those people closest to me to fully assess the commitment, which I know from firsthand experience is considerable.

After more careful consideration, and with some wistfulness, I am now respectfully bowing out of the race before I cause any undue distractions from other campaigns.

Had I run for Select Board, I would have focused my campaign on supporting the new Open Space & Recreation Plan, the continued revitalization of East Dedham through arts/culture/economic development, advocating for quality, affordable housing, and improving communication from Town Hall, boards, and committees.

And, perhaps most importantly, I also would have focused on the need for the Town of Dedham to adopt a code of conduct & social media policy across all boards and committees in the face of what has been dispiriting behavior by some of our elected officials in recent years and months.

Since returning my nomination papers, I've had a chance to sit down with both Select Board incumbent Dennis Teehan and Select Board candidate Kevin Coughlin to share my concerns. I appreciate that they are both very sensitive to the issues of conduct/ethics and leadership. I am confident that they will support the code of conduct/social media policy efforts, which Select Board member Sarah MacDonald has researched and moved forward in recent months.

As a Precinct 6 Town Meeting member, and as a citizen at-large, I remain fully committed to advancing these issues that are so critical in shaping the very nature and character of our town.

And, as always, I remain deeply grateful to all those who have supported my prior campaigns, and who have worked with me over the years on a myriad of political and civic efforts. With continued service and collaboration with so many kindred spirits, I know we will keep moving Dedham forward for many years to come.

Onward,

Paul Reynolds
