ORLEANS – “We’ve been out of it for days,” a pharmacy clerk at the Orleans Stop and Shop told a customer on Tuesday. She’s talking about hand sanitizer, and it’s in great demand now that people are taking precautions against the coronavirus.

Other stores in the area were sold out as well, a check by a reporter for The Cape Codder found.

A Google search turned up this homemade recipe for hand sanitizer:

2/3 cup of 99 percent rubbing alcohol (isopropyl alcohol)

1/3 cup aloe vera gel

8 to 10 drops essential oil, optional (such as lavender, vanilla, peppermint, grapefruit)

A bowl and spoon

A funnel

A recycled liquid soap or hand sanitizer bottle

Mix the ingredients together and then use the funnel to pour them into the bottle. Screw the pump back onto the bottle and you're ready to go.

The active ingredient in this hand sanitizer recipe is the alcohol, which needs to comprise at least 60 percent of the product in order to be an effective disinfectant.

The essential oils are included as a way to help soothe your skin.

Now let’s hope the stores don’t sell out of rubbing alcohol or aloe vera. – Donna Tunney
