Belmont World Film’s 19th annual International Film Series will open March 15, with an optional dinner reception featuring authentic Cuban cuisine from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Studio Cinema, 376 Trapelo Road, Belmont.
The film series will run from March 15 to May 3, at the Studio Cinema in Belmont and West Newton Cinema, 1296 Washington St. The dinner reception will precede the New England premiere of the Cuban film “Agosto.”
Catered by El Oriental de Cuba in Jamaica Plain, the menu will feature a selection of chicken, beef and cheese empanadas and Cuban sandwiches to start, followed by Ropa Vieja, the iconic Cuban dish featuring shredded beef, tomatoes, peppers and onions and chicken fricassee, accompanied by three different kinds of rice with beans, sweet and green plantain crisps and salad. The meal ends with the famous tres leches cake, a super moist confection soaked in three different kinds of milk — sweetened condensed, evaporated and whole — and topped with whipped cream.
El Oriental de Cuba was Boston’s first Cuban restaurant, opening originally in 1994 to serve the area’s Latino community. It is still one of only a handful of Cuban restaurants in the Greater Boston area.
“Agosto” will be screened after the dinner at 7:30 p.m.
Tickets to the opening dinner reception are $30 and must be reserved by March 12, at midnight; tickets will not be sold at the door. Either purchase tickets online at http://belmontworldfilm.org or mail a check to Belmont World Film, PO Box 104, Belmont, MA 02478. Tickets to the film screening must be purchased separately and are $11 general admission and $9 for students and seniors in advance at http://belmontworldfilm.org and $12 and $10, respectively, in person at the box office with cash beginning at 7 p.m. EBT and WIC cardholders can purchase tickets at half price on day of show. “Passports” provide eight admissions for $75; they can be shared with one other person.
