WEYMOUTH — Brian Kelley said he and Kimberly Richards attended the Nash School together, so he was happy when she moved back to Weymouth and their daughters became friends while attending that same school.
Kelley said friends and family members are now rallying around Richards’ 11-year-old daughter, Ella, who became an orphan on Mother’s Day this year when Richards died of a heart attack. Richards’ husband, Brian Richards, died of liver failure in 2012, Kelley said.
“What do you do for an orphan who is with her grandparents?” Kelley said. “Weymouth is a great town for benefits, so we’re trying to raise some money to help her down the road with whatever needs she may have.”
Kelley has organized a fundraiser to benefit Ella Richards that is scheduled for 7 to 11 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, at the Hall, 610 Broad St., Weymouth. The event will include music, refreshments and a cash bar.
Kimberly Richards was a 1993 graduate of Weymouth High School. She worked as an executive assistant with the South Shore Chamber of Commerce for many years.
Kelley said Richards was a “great person” who volunteered her time and would do anything for someone in need.
“I know Kim would have done this for me, so I’m trying to do something for her and, more importantly, Ella,” he said. “She was that kind of person who would do anything for everybody. She loved kids and being around them.”
Kelley said Ella is living with her maternal grandparents and “taking it all in stride.”
“She and my daughter are on the same bus every day. It’s tough,” he said. “She’s hanging in there as good as she can.”
