In celebration of Santander Bank’s “Red Card Against Bullying” campaign, New England Revolution players and Playworks volunteers teamed up with bank executives and employee volunteers to rebuild and beautify the Gardner Pilot Academy playground on Sept. 16 in Boston’s Allston neighborhood.

In alignment with the campaign’s goal of facilitating safe and welcoming school environments, Revolution midfielder Scott Caldwell, goalkeeper Cody Cropper and goalkeeper Matt Turner also assisted in leading the school’s fourth and fifth grade students through recess activities that cultivate healthy environments that encourage inclusive and respectful play for all.

Santander Bank launched “Red Card Against Bullying” in August in partnership with the New England Revolution. The campaign benefits the New England chapter of Playworks, a national nonprofit organization that partners with elementary schools to lead inclusive recess activities where students are encouraged to be physically active and develop healthy social behaviors. Through the remainder of the 2019 season, Santander is donating $1,000 for each Revolution assist recorded, up to $20,000. With 27% of Boston children between 6 and 17 years old reporting being bullied at school in the past year, Santander designed the campaign to generate awareness and provide critical funds that will be used to train Playworks’ Junior Coaches, a leadership program that helps fourth to sixth grade students facilitate inclusive and fair play among their classmates.

More than 20 Santander and Revolution volunteers contributed to the playground beautification project, bringing the impact of Santander’s anti-bullying campaign to life by creating a safe and inclusive school environment that encourages healthy play and acceptance. Through recess activities including Santander, Caldwell, Cropper and Turner, along with Playworks junior coaches created new opportunities for students as they taught the importance of teamwork and respect heading into the new school year.

“Respect is at the center of everything we do, which is why we’re honored that our friends at the New England Revolution and Playworks were able to join us to beautify the Gardner Pilot Academy’s playground and teach children new ways to demonstrate respect and safe play during recess,” said Barbara Glasser, chief marketing officer at Santander Bank. “With bullying being such a prevalent issue in today’s schools and across our community, the ‘Red Card Against Bullying’ campaign provides us with a new opportunity to further reinforce the importance of empathy, inclusivity and teamwork inside and outside the classroom.”

Santander Bank is proud to serve as the Official Bank of the New England Revolution, now playing its 24th season.
