Scituate resident and 35-year veteran of the Scituate Fire Department, Daniel Mendes, was recently awarded the Medal of Honor during Portuguese Heritage Day at the State House.
The Portuguese-American caucus of Commonwealth legislators annually hosts a Portuguese Heritage Day at the State House.
Legislators nominate leaders in their districts who are of Portuguese speaking descent to be honored with a Medal of Honor for their contributions to their community.
This was the 35th year of these proceedings.
State Representative Patrick Kearney, D-Scituate, nominated Mendes.
Mendes, who volunteers within the community and is a pillar of Scituate’s Cape Verdean population, was awarded the Medal of Honor by Senator Patrick O’Connor, R-Weymouth.
Kearney is at sea on active duty training for the United States Naval Reserves.
The President of the Regional Government of the Azores was the guest of Honor for the ceremony.
