The Boys & Girls Club of Assabet Valley announced its 2019 Youth of the Year, Abby Hayes, club staff and volunteer.
On May 5, Abby spent the day at the Boys & Girls Club of Worcester, competing for the 2019 Massachusetts Youth of the Year award.
“Abby did an amazing job representing our club and members,” said Rebecca Lynch, executive director.
She will be recognized in November at the club’s annual Service to Youth Celebration for her achievement.
Abby Hayes is a 16-year-old sophomore at Lincoln-Sudbury High School. Abby began her club service two years ago when she decided she wanted to volunteer and give back to her community. After volunteering for a full school year, Abby was given the opportunity to work as a summer counselor where she was also the club’s certified lifeguard. Abby prides herself on helping others lead a healthy lifestyle, specifically in the club’s SMART Girls Empowerment group which she continues to run as a volunteer. Abby plans on pursuing an education in medicine and dreams of being a pediatric oncologist in the future.
“In my efforts to promote a healthy lifestyle, I plan to create an environment in which every young person feels safe to express their ideas to be heard,” says Abby. “I plan to act as a light and affect those around me with compassion, honesty and responsibility in order to achieve the values of the Boys & Girls Club of Assabet Valley.”
