MARION – The Wareham Dept. of Natural Resources and various other agencies of the Buzzards Bay Task Force responded to an unmanned and adrift paddle boat in the area of Butlers Point near Bird Island off Marion Tuesday morning. An extensive search for possible person(s) in the water was conducted and later concluded pending further information.

The vessel did not have any identifying marks or owner information and the U.S. Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England as well as the Marion Harbormaster are trying to identify an owner, according to the WDNR.

The WDNR added in a Facebook post: “Just a friendly reminder for individuals that leave small vessels such as this, kayaks, canoes, dinghies or tenders along a shoreline to put identifying information in the vessel if it is not registered.

“As first responders on the waterfront we have an obligation to respond to such calls which can be very time consuming, searches are very expensive and it ties up many resources. The few minutes it would have taken to mark this vessel would have potentially eliminated the two-hour-long search that was conducted by nine surrounding agencies."

The owner is urged to contact the: USCG, 508-457-3211, or Marion Harbormaster at 508-748-3535.
