At its June 6 meeting, Salem State College’s board of trustees elected David Abdoo chairman.


Abdoo, a 1997 Salem State graduate, is the media and intergovernmental affairs officer for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) in the New England region. He serves as the liaison for local, county, state, tribal and federal governmental relations within New England.


Previously, Abdoo served as the policy director in the state’s Executive Office of Transportation, providing policy analysis and working on intergovernmental relations for the department and for the executive branch of government. Prior to that, he worked in the Massachusetts Senate, where he handled health care and transportation issues.


At home in Lawrence, Abdoo serves as chairman of the town’s planning board, a position he has held for more than five years. Additionally, he serves as the city’s representative to the Merrimack Valley Planning Commission. He is an active member of St. Patrick’s church and serves on its finance council and other ministries at the South Lawrence parish.
