Whether it’s a bandana engineered to keep your pet cool, designer dog soap, or stuffed Hillary Clinton cat toy, a new pet shop in town can not only provide the toys to entertain a fury friend, but the owner as well.

Located near town center, Thinkin’ Cats and Dogs separates itself from the mainstream as a niche “toy store” for the two popular pets, with owner, Amy Ruggiero, looking toward to filling her Boston Road location with toys from the floor to the ceiling.

“I wanted to make it so it wasn’t a typical toy store,” Ruggiero said. “I want it to feel like a toy store.”

Ruggiero, who opened her store in February, had worked as a software consultant previously and finally decided to go for something new and open the store.

“I want people who want to buy something for their cat or dog and have fun,” said Ruggiero.

The 15-year town resident has lined the walls of the small store with stuffed animals and suspended dog toys, as well as a wardrobe section with small dog apparel up on hangers and metal poles like one would see in any clothing store.

Thinkin’ Cats and Dogs also sells items such as a “Dog agility starting kit,” which contains lawn obstacles and instructions to train your pup, and the popular Kong dog toys, which can include the denim covered “Wubba” or the “Kong Classic.”

“I’m constantly on the hunt for fun and exciting things,” Ruggiero said, stressing that she wants her customers to have fun in her central air-conditioned premises.

Ruggiero said she hopes to help efforts in town to place stray animals in loving homes by posting photos and other information in her store.

Ruggiero hopes to expand to carrying toys for ferret, rabbits, and birds, which she said customers have already been requesting.

“At the end of the day, I’ll see if it’s something the town wants,” said Ruggiero, who has a Chesapeake Bay Retriever, Ben, and two cats, Teddy and Nuttings, named after Nuttings Lake.
