Steward Hospice Volunteer training. If you are an adult age 18+ who is interested in providing companionship and support to patients and families served by Steward Hospice, you are invited to attend an upcoming Hospice Volunteer training. Training includes the philosophy of hospice care, a comprehensive overview of services offered by hospice, and discussions about the physical, emotional, social, and spiritual issues that people may encounter at the end of life. A special emphasis is placed on effective communication and listening skills. Volunteers with day, evening, or weekend availability, as well as Portuguese-speaking adults and veterans of the U.S. Armed Services, are welcome to apply. In addition, we welcome applications for administrative volunteers for our office in Fall River. Trainings are provided at no cost to you. Inquiries are welcome. June 20, 27, July 11, 18 and 25: “Eat Healthy, Be Active.” This free series, offered by Saint Anne’s Hospital, is open to any adult working on making lifestyle changes in an effort to improve health and well-being. Workshops discuss such topics as healthy foods that taste great; quick, healthy meals and snacks; eating healthy on a budget; tips for losing weight and keeping it off; making healthy eating part of a total lifestyle; and physical activity as the key to living well. Facilitator: Rose Couto, RN, CDE, of Saint Anne’s Hospital’s Diabetes Education Program. This series is offered on Wednesdays, and participants may join at any time. July 11 and July 19: Weight loss surgery informational seminar. If you have struggled with your weight and can’t seem to lose weight or keep it off, it may be time to consider weight loss surgery. Join weight loss surgeon Matthew LeMaitre, MD, for a free program about advances in weight loss surgery. Dr. LeMaitre, who is with the Steward Center for Weight Control, is accepting new patients for weight loss surgery at Saint Anne’s Hospital. Get answers to frequently asked questions, and meet with Dr. LeMaitre.

July 11: Diabetes education and support, a free series sponsored by the Diabetes Education Program at Saint Anne’s Hospital. This free monthly program for adults with diabetes and their families is offered by Saint Anne’s certified diabetes educators. This month’s topic: “Osteoporosis Prevention and Management.” There is no charge, and participants do not need to be patients of Saint Anne’s Hospital. July 12: Insulin User Group. This monthly group, sponsored by Saint Anne’s Hospital’s Diabetes Education Program, is designed especially for patients with diabetes who use insulin, or those who are considering the use of insulin via pen, syringe, “V-Go” device, or pump. It is a great opportunity to talk to and learn from other insulin users who face the same challenges. Participants do not need to be patients of Saint Anne’s Hospital, and new patients and family members are welcome. Program meets on the second Thursday of the month. July 17: American Red Cross blood drive. Donations of blood and blood products are critical to maintain a strong and stable blood supply. If you meet certain criteria – for example, you are healthy, have not donated whole blood in the last eight weeks or double red cells in the last 16 weeks, and weigh at least 110 pounds – please stop by this blood drive, sponsored by the American Red Cross. Ongoing: Wig fittings for patients undergoing cancer treatment. The American Cancer Society provides wig fittings, hats, scarves, and other items for patients who are undergoing cancer treatment and concerned about hair loss.
