Some came in athletic gear, others in festive Irish colors, and still others in elaborate costumes, but they all came for the same reason: to support the area’s seniors.

Hundreds of residents competed in the 7th annual Mick Morgan’s St. Patrick’s 5K on Saturday, with funds going to support Sharon’s HESSCO Elder Services.

The event, which started and ended at Mick Morgan’s Irish Pub in Walpole, is HESSCO’s largest fundraiser.

The event coincided with the national March for Meals campaign, which mobilizes hundreds of local Meals on Wheels programs across the country to reach out to their communities and build support.

"This is a perfect opportunity to shed light on HESSCO’s Nutrition Program," the group said in a press release. "With the assistance of an impressive nearly 700 volunteers, HESSCO packages and delivers an average of 130,000 home-delivered meals each year and serves an additional 30,000 meals annually in dining room settings."

Volunteers in the program make it a point to deliver more than a meal.

"Volunteer drivers not only deliver a hot, nutritious meal, but they provide a wellness check and a friendly visit," the organization said. "For many, this is the difference needed to maintain their dignity and independence at home."

The race route started at the pub on Rte. 1, up Baker Street into Walpole and back to finish at Mick Morgan’s.

There were awards for the best overall male, overall female, fastest boy and girl (under 18) and fastest team.

There were also prizes for festive costumes, and medals were awarded to the top three male and female best times in seven different age categories.

"The race has strong community support and corporate sponsorship, which helps to defray operational expenses," the organization said.

This year’s Finish Line Sponsor was Central Auto Group, while Platinum Sponsors were ADJ Group, Anodyne Homemaker Services Corp, Dedham Savings, Douglas A. King Builders Inc., Lamar Advertising, Pawtucket Credit Union, Wegmans, WROR and Zalkin Law Firm Inc.

Dozens of others signed on as Gold and Silver Sponsors.

On race day, many sponsors were on site with information and giveaways. There were also raffles, entertainment, refreshments, a photo booth, face painting and an after-party on site.

"All proceeds from this race will be used to support HESSCO to continue our mission of delivering meals to those who have difficulty making their own, providing homemaking and home health aide services to those in need, advocating for residents in nursing facilities, counseling Medicare recipients on health insurance options and protecting our seniors from neglect and abuse," the organization said.
