Home Maintenance and Improvement: 7-9 p.m. Feb. 27 and March 6, Newton North High School, 457 Walnut St., Newton. Cost: $59. Attendees learn to maintain their own home. The class will review basics such as the systems in a house and the tools needed to keep them in good working order. The class will also discuss the essentials for small maintenance and repair projects like hanging objects, patching walls, fixing leaky faucets and painting.
Verbal Self-Defense: 7-9 p.m. Feb. 27, Newton North High School, 457 Walnut St., Newton. Cost: $39. Students learn techniques for setting respectful limits with someone they work with, someone in their family or someone they see regularly in their neighborhood. Attendees will practice ways to maintain integrity while avoiding an argument with someone they disagree with.
Remedies for Joints and Digestion: 7-8:30 p.m. Feb. 28, Newton North High School, 457 Walnut St., Newton. Cost: $29. Students learn about traditional herbs and foods used to improve digestion. The class will sample some simple teas that can be made at home, and discuss herbs that can be found in grocery stores to reduce inflammation: turmeric, ginger, black pepper and more. The class will also discuss other simple lifestyle practices that can help joints stay flexible and at ease in addition to herbal teas. Resource handouts will be provided.
Getting the Most from Your iPhone: 7-9 p.m. Feb. 28 and March 7, Newton North High School, 457 Walnut St., Newton. Cost: $85. This class will start with the basics: the different ways to touch the screen, calling options and managing contacts. Then, students will learn about apps: getting new ones, seeing open apps and deleting ones no longer useful. They will learn about settings, syncing with iCloud, giving voice commands, and get tips for using the screen keyboard. If time allows, the class will go over frequently used apps such as messaging, email and the camera.
NCE Kids Summer Registration is Open: This summer, an assortment of classes will be offered in art, science, cooking, theatre, computer programming and more. NCE also offers summer sports camps. Garden City Sports camps will be offered, along with longstanding NCE favorites.
