A pair of Wilmington eateries, Wilmington House of Pizza and LaRosa’s Restaurant, were the big winners at Monday’s night’s second annual Pizza War held to raise money for the fight against cancer. Almost 200 people joined in the fun to sample and then to vote on their favorite pizza created by 11 area restaurants.
The American Cancer Society Relay for Life of Wilmington-Billerica-Tewksbury sponsored the event.
Other Wilmington entrants included Greg's Pizza, Nick's Pizza, Pizza Mia & Uptown Deli, Rizzo's, Rocco's, Sweet Pizza, and EJ's Fresh Frozen Pizza. Tewksbury was represented by Anthony's Roast Beef, and Suppa's Pizza from Billerica brought its home town favorites.
Wilmington House of Pizza was awarded "Best Cheese Pizza" and LaRosa’s was the runner up. Wilmington House of Pizza also won "Best Specialty Pizza" with their Cheeseburger and Fries entry. LaRosa’s , again finished with its Chicken Broccoli Alfredo pizza.
This is the second year Wilmington House of Pizza won the contest. Heidi Jelev, co-owner Wilmington House of Pizza, was flattered to win again. She and operations manager Tierney McCue served guests. Wilmington House of Pizza has been a part of the community for 39 years.
LaRosa’s chef-owner Jason Evans was also happy to take part in the event and to support the fight against cancer. He featured several specialty pizzas in addition to his winning Chicken Broccoli Alfredo. His offerings included eggplant-sausage-ricotta pizza and a veggie pizza as well.
"It’s been great; I’m happy," he said before the winners were announced. "I love sharing my food with people."
Another strong contender was Suppa’s Big Mac Pizza.
"It went quick," said Karen Grabowski, a Relay committee member. "As soon as people heard the name and saw how good it looked, they wanted some."
Suppa’s has been recognized as one of Phantom Gourmet’s hidden gems.
The event raised $1,000 and kicked off the Relay for Life season. Relay is an overnight family fun-filled experience. There’s music, entertainment, games, food and more as the community joins together to celebrate, remember, and fight back against cancer.
