Holiday Hours

For Christmas and New Year’s weekends, the library will close at 1 p.m. the Saturday before Christmas, Dec. 23, and reopen at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 26. The library will close at 1 p.m. the Saturday before New Year’s Eve, Dec. 30, and reopen at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 2.

Mitten Tree

Help local families by donating mittens, gloves, hats, and scarves to keep hands and heads warm this winter! Winter accessories will be accepted through the month of December and hung on our mitten trees in the Children’s Room and Main Lobby. During the month of December, donations may be dropped off at the Main Check Out desk or in the Children’s Room.

Food for Fines

Throughout the month of December, please help A Servant’s Heart Food Pantry by returning your overdue items along with a nonperishable food donation and your fines will be forgiven. Waived fees apply to overdue fines only; costs for damaged or lost items are still required.

Children’s Programs

Saturday, Dec. 9: Toddler Songs (ages 1-4 years). Toddler Songs is a 30-minute drop-in program for toddlers ages 1-4 years and their caregivers. The group is led by Melrose resident Jessica Buster. Register online or with Children’s Room (781-665-2314) staff the morning of each program. 11-11:30 a.m.

Monday, Dec. 11: Toddler Time (18 - 36 months). Toddler Time is a registered program for children ages 18-36 months in the company of an adult. The 30-minute early literacy program includes stories, songs, finger plays, plenty of movement and fun. Register online or with library staff the morning of each program. 10:30-11 a.m.

Tuesday, Dec. 12: Music with Dara (2 years and older). Join Dara VanRemoortel in her popular monthly bedtime music program for toddlers and their parents. Best for children ages 2 and older. Each program begins promptly at 6:30 p.m. Children are invited to attend in their PJ’s. No registration required. Sponsored by the Friends of Melrose Public Library. 6:30-7:15 p.m.

Parents will be able to register their child the morning of each class on the library’s events and programs calendar at www.melrosepubliclibrary.org beginning at 8 a.m. Please register each child separately. 10:3-11:15 a.m.

Friday, Dec. 15: Boppin’ Toddlers (ages 10 - 18 months). Interactive music program with Meredith Pizzi, MT-BC, for parents and their toddlers, ages 10 to 18 months. Register online beginning 8 a.m. the morning of each program. Sponsored by the Friends of MPL. 10:15-11 a.m.

Friday, Dec. 15: Rockin’ Babies (ages 0 to 9 months). Interactive music program with Meredith Pizzi for caregivers and their babies age 0-9 months. Register online beginning 8 a.m. the morning of each program. Sponsored by the Friends of MPL. 11:15 a.m. to noon

Thursday, Dec. 21: Story Dance Time (ages 2 1/2 to 5 years). Children ages 2 1/2 to 5 years old are invited (along with a caregiver) to dance, play and use their imaginations in the hour-long event. The program includes movements with music, listening games to promote reading readiness, storytelling with stage props and discovery time with rhythm instruments and a keyboard. Register online beginning 8 a.m. the morning of each program. Sponsored by the Friends of Melrose Public Library. 10:30-11:30 a.m.

Thursday, Dec. 28: Snack Pack (fourth and fifth grades). Calling all book-lovers entering the fourth and fifth grades! You are invited to participate in the library’s monthly book discussion group. Register online or with library staff. The library provides the books and snacks. Ask at the Children’s Room desk for a copy of the book. 3-4 p.m.

Teen Programs

Monday, Dec. 18: Yak, Snack and Read: Graphic Novels (middle school). Come to Yak, Snack and Read Graphic Novel Club! This month’s title is TBA. Books are available in the TeenZone and Children’s Room of the library. Pizza will be served. Bring a friend. Sign up online at melrosepubliclibrary.org. 6-7 p.m.

Adult Programs

Tuesday, Dec. 12: Great Books Discussion Group. This group meets on two Tuesdays of every month (September to June) to discuss short stories from anthologies. The members continue to read selections from Classical American Short Stories. New members are always welcome. Leader: Victor Amirault. 7-8:30 p.m.

Wednesday, Dec. 13: Adult Coloring Night. Come unwind and get it touch with your inner child! Materials will be provided, but feel free to bring your own! To reserve a seat, sign up online or speak with a library staff member. 7-8:45 p.m.

Tuesday, Dec. 19: Tasty Books for Hungry Readers. Join friends old and new for a lively discussion while enjoying snacks and treat inspired by our monthly book selection. Stop by the Main Desk to pick up a copy of “Close to Famous” by Joan Bauer. 7:30-8:45 p.m.

Thursday, Dec. 21: MPL Book Group. In celebration of the Henry David Thoreau’s Bicentennial, we will read selections from “Walden: ‘The Pond In Winter,’” “Economy” and “Conclusion” as part of the Statewide Read. Please bring a gift-wrapped book for a Yankee Book Swap. Enjoy a discussion of the books that we have brought. Holiday treats will be served. If you have a specialty that you would like to share, bring it for the table! 7:30-8:45 p.m.

Wednesday, Jan. 10: History Book Group (Adults). Join a lively discussion group focused on history! A subject is determined each month and participants read a nonfiction history book related to the topic. New members are welcome to join and experience history from many points of view on one topic. No other history book club offers this unique approach! The topic will be the Cold War between the USA and USSR (1945-1991). Members are asked to read a nonfiction book (or a chapter or section of a book) on the topic and be prepared to talk about it to the members for about ten minutes. Possible topics include the arms race, proxy wars (Vietnam, Afghanistan), espionage, and the thawing of relations. All are welcome to attend and join in the discussion or just listen and learn! 7-8:45 p.m.
